Affiliate Marketing is a revenue sharing venture between a website owner and an online merchant. The website owner will place advertisements on his websites to either help sell the merchant's products or to send potential customers to the merchant's website, all in exchange for a share of the profits.

Affiliate networks that already have several advertisers typically also have a large pool of publishers. These publishers could be potentially recruited, and there is also an increased chance that publishers in the network apply to the program on their own, without the need for recruitment efforts by the advertiser. Relevant websites that attract the same target audiences as the advertiser but without competing with it are potential affiliate partners as well. Vendors or existing customers can also become recruits if doing so makes sense and does not violate any laws or regulations.

Almost any website could be recruited as an affiliate publisher, although high-traffic websites are more likely interested in (for their own sake) low-risk cost per mille or medium-risk cost per click deals rather than higher-risk cost per action or revenue share deals.

There are three ways to earn money through affiliate marketing:

Pay Per Click — Every time a potential customer leaves the affiliate website by "clicking" on the link leading to the merchant's website, a certain amount of money is deposited in the affiliate's account. This amount can be pennies or dollars depending on the product and amount of the commission. The more number of visitors, the more number of clicks. The more number of clicks, that much amount of earning is generated. Once the income balance has reached minimum payout parameter set by the website owner or merchant, then the payout is made to the affiliate.

Pay Per Sale — Every time a sale is made as a result of advertising on the affiliate's website, a percentage, or commission, is deposited into the affiliate's account.
Pay Per Lead — Every time a potential client registers at the merchant's website as a result of the advertisement on the affiliate's account, a previously determined amount is deposited into the affiliate's account.

Very Important Tips for an Affiliate

1. Choose a Niche Market

Before you begin, it is important to choose a niche market of products, services, and information that you will provide. Do not try to be everything to everyone. Instead, choose a topic area and focus your attention on becoming the top consumer resource for information for your niche.

2. Choose the Best Affiliate Programs

Do not simply sign up for the first affiliate programs to catch your eye. Spend some time researching the available affiliate programs. Create a list of affiliate programs that offer products relevant to your website. List the pros and cons associated with each, including commission rate, payment guidelines, and linking options. It may take some time to find the best affiliate program for you, but this extra work will pay off in the long run in better site traffic and increased sales.

3. Create Great Content

Becoming a consumer resource is one of the best ways to succeed in affiliate marketing. How can you establish a credible and useful website? By creating content that your readers want and need, you will establish an audience that is interested in what you have to say and what your have to sell. Some great ideas for affiliate content include product reviews, gift guides and other consumer advice.

4. Track Your Progress

Once you have established your affiliate marketing site, it is absolutely vital to keep track of your sales success. Some affiliate programs offer detailed reports of site traffic and sales, which can be especially beneficial. Always keep track of which items are selling and which are not. By using this information to plan future content, marketing tactics, and product choices, you will be able to build an affiliate marketing site that will be successful for years to come.
